What is Path of Radiance? — World of Tellius
"Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance" is a grand tactical RPG set on the continent of Tellius. Released for GameCube in 2005, it is the 9th entry in the series and a landmark work — the first to fully transition to 3D graphics — and remains beloved by countless fans to this day.
World of Tellius
The continent of Tellius is home to two coexisting races: humans known as "Beorc", and shape-shifting half-beasts known as "Laguz", who can transform into beasts, birds, or dragons. However, deep-rooted prejudice and conflict between the two races forms a central theme of the story.
The continent contains several nations, each with its own political system and military.
| Nation | Race | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Crimea Kingdom | Beorc | A peaceful, moderate kingdom. Invaded by neighboring Daein at the start of the story |
| Daein Kingdom | Beorc | Militaristic nation ruled by the "Mad King" Ashnard. The main antagonist faction |
| Begnion Empire | Beorc | The continent's largest nation, with a formidable military featuring the Holy Dragon Knights |
| Gallia Kingdom | Laguz (Beast Tribe) | Ruled by Lion King Caineghis |
| Kilvas Kingdom | Laguz (Bird Tribe — Raven) | Raven King Naesala rules this island nation that lives off piracy, deeply distrustful of the Beorc |
| Phoenicis Kingdom | Laguz (Bird Tribe — Hawk) | Hawk King Tibarn rules this proud hawk nation — noble, in stark contrast to Kilvas |
| Goldoa Kingdom | Laguz (Dragon Tribe) | Ruled by Black Dragon King Deghinsea. A closed nation with "Non-Interference" as state policy. Possesses the strongest military force |
Protagonist:
Ike and the Greil Mercenaries
The protagonist of this game,
Ike, is a 17-year-old young mercenary belonging to the Greil Mercenaries. The company, led by his father Greil, lived peacefully in a rural part of Crimea, taking on small jobs.
But on the fateful day, the Daein army launches a lightning invasion into Crimea.
Thus begins the grand story of a humble mercenary who would grow into a hero shaping the fate of the continent.
Ike (Earth) ×
Oscar (Earth) — their avoid rate exceeds terrain effects, building a near-invincible wall.
Base & Bonus EXP System
After clearing each chapter, you gain "Bonus EXP" — special experience points you can freely distribute to any unit at the base.
Strategic Use of Bonus EXP
Use it to rescue under-leveled units, focus on specific stats, "stat-grind" via save/load, or raise late-bloomer units (
Jill,
Nephenee, etc.) early.
Save just before leveling up, and retry until you get the desired stat boosts — ideal growth is achievable. Especially when considering Maniac Mode or continuation to the GameCube sequel, mastering this system is essential.
Difficulty Selection Guide | Which Should You Choose?
Normal Mode
Recommended for: Series beginners, story lovers
Standard enemy count and strength, with plenty of Bonus EXP. Forgiving difficulty allowing retries — all characters can be trained.
Hard Mode
Recommended for: Series veterans seeking moderate challenge
Enemy stats are increased and reinforcement patterns intensified. Resource management becomes tighter — strategic training plans are needed.
Maniac Mode
Recommended for: Series experts seeking the ultimate challenge
The highest difficulty. Enemy counts are massively increased — without RNG manipulation, some maps are nearly impossible.
Maniac Mode Key Strategies
Strategic weapon forging (especially Hit boosts), early support-building (prioritize Earth-affinity units), focused Bonus EXP investment, and biorhythm-aware tactics are essential. Note also that recruit conditions are stricter — e.g. the prison inmates in Chapter 11.
How to Play — Chapter Structure
Early Game (Prologue – Chapter 10): Foundation & Recruitment
Prologue "Mercenaries" is the tutorial.
Ike trains with his father Greil in a practice battle.
Chapter 1-5 "Crimean Escape Arc" is for learning core systems.
Titania,
Oscar,
Boyd and other key members join. At the end of Chapter 5,
Ike takes over as captain of the mercenaries.
Chapter 6-10 "Gallia Kingdom Arc" features
Mia,
Ilyana,
Mist and other important characters join in succession. Weapon Forge unlocks at Chapter 8. Laguz units (
Lethe,
Mordecai) make their debut here.
Mid Game (Chapter 11 – 20): Building Forces & Real Battles
Chapter 11-15 "Mercenary Reinforcement Arc" features
Zihark,
Nephenee,
Jill and others who shine through the endgame join. Maps grow more complex, strategy deepens. After Chapter 15, advanced class changes begin in earnest.
Chapter 16-20 "Begnion Empire Arc" features more large-scale battles.
Zonta,
Muarim and others with special recruitment conditions appear. Chapter 17 is a four-part extended battle.
End Game (Chapter 21 – Final): The Crimean Liberation War

you reunite with the Crimean knights led by Geoffrey.
Chapter 26-28 "Eve of the Final Battle" features
Princess Elincia joins your party. The Black Knight is faced in Chapter 27 'The Hour of Destiny'.
Nasir /
Ena route splits depending on whether you defeat the Black Knight.

Tibarn,
Naesala,
Giffca), you can choose reinforcements. The ending varies based on support relationships.
Tips for Advice
Who to Train First
| Priority | Characters | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | Ike | Protagonist with many forced deployments. High growth rates make him the eventual ace |
| #2 | Oscar | Earth affinity, great synergy with Ike. Cavalry mobility is also excellent |
| #3 | Boyd | Stable damage from start to finish. 60% Strength growth rate |
| #4 | Soren | Magic attack pillar. Effective vs. heavily-armored foes |
| #5 | Titania | Reliable early-game wall. Bench her after mid-game |
Early Game Tips
Prioritize EXP for unpromoted units. The promoted
Titania gains little EXP — overusing her early stunts other characters' growth. The standard tactic is to disarm her and use her as bait.
Watch weapon durability (especially expensive ones). Always visit villages and houses to collect items. Make sure to steal valuables from thieves. For class change, waiting until Lv. 20 maximizes growth.
Mid-Game Strategy
Forge weapons every chapter without fail. Start building support relationships early, and allocate Bonus EXP strategically.
Don't hoard Master Seals — use them, and stock up on effective weapons against specific enemy types.
