The Mortal Kombat series progresses with Earth and otherworldly realms vying for its control at its core.

The narrative primarily revolves around the conflict between the Netherrealm, a realm of gods, and the Outworld, a realm of demons. Typically, Earth's heroes get entangled in these otherworldly conflicts, being drawn into the fight, which forms the crux of Mortal Kombat's story. While other realms appear throughout the series, understanding these key realms - Earth, Netherrealm, and Outworld - makes it easier to grasp the overarching storyline.
